Legal Issues for Nonprofit Professionals

This workshop is designed with nonprofit professionals in mind and provides very practical information to ensure that their organizations are in compliance. It will also clarify what is required and what is optional. Attendees will learn:

- How to conduct your own “legal audit”
- When, why, and how to conduct financial oversight including audits or financial reviews
- How to protect organizational records: Executive sessions, intellectual property, and confidential information
- General risk management
- How to effectively use professional advice from lawyers, accountants, and other advisors
Karen Funston is a founding partner of the law firm Buri Funston Mumford, PLLC. She focuses her practice primarily on business law, employment law, and nonprofit law. Karen’s experiences working with a variety of organizations in the private, public and nonprofit sectors give her a broad understanding of practical as well as legal issues.
Before becoming an attorney, Karen earned a Masters Degree and served as Director of the Bellingham Food Bank Network and an administrator for Womencare Shelter. She also worked as an administrative staff member for the Whatcom County Department of Public Works, and a bookkeeper for various local businesses.
